Notification Emails and Digests

When your default channel or a specific notification type includes Email, Command Established sends that notification to your inbox. To keep a busy department from turning into inbox spam, most notification emails are bundled into a digest — one email that collects everything that happened in a short window — while genuinely time-sensitive alerts still go out immediately.

This only affects the email channel. In-app notifications and push notifications are always delivered right away, regardless of how the email is handled. If you want to be reached the moment something happens, see Enable Push Notifications.

How digests work

  1. The first batchable notification email for you opens a 15-minute window.
  2. Any other batchable notifications for you during that window are added to the same batch instead of being emailed one by one.
  3. When the window closes, you get one email:
    • If only one notification accumulated, it's the normal single-notification email — nothing looks different.
    • If more than one accumulated, you get a digest with the subject "N updates from your department", grouped by type with counts and a link to each item.

The window is measured from the first notification, not the most recent one, so a busy stretch can never hold your email indefinitely — the longest any batchable email waits is about 15 minutes. Digests are sent per person, per department: if you belong to more than one department, each department has its own window and sends its own digest email, so what's in a given digest depends only on what that department notified you about.

A digest shows up to 50 items. If more than that piled up in one window, the email lists the first 50 and links you to the department dashboard, where the bell icon opens the full notification list.

Which emails are still sent immediately?

These notification types skip the digest and are emailed as soon as they happen:

  • New CAD incident from dispatch
  • Incident assigned to you
  • Schedule decisions — schedule exception approved, schedule exception denied, and schedule assignment changed
  • Time-sensitive duty crew alerts — understaffed shifts, shift reminders, assignments due, and late seat releases
  • Training cancelled
  • Member invited (the invite email itself)
  • Permit application verification — the link an applicant needs to verify their application
  • Subscription and payment problems — subscription payment failed, subscription canceled, invoice payment failed
  • Stripe and money-handling alertsStripe Connect action required, Stripe Connect disabled, charge disputed, refund recording failed, invoice overpayment
  • Elections — election opened and election closing soon

Everything else — work order activity, SOP assignments and reviews, certification and inspection reminders, incident review workflow, training scheduled, trial reminders, and so on — is batched.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

I'm an admin — why do work-order comment emails arrive bundled?

Work order comments are one of the main reasons digests exist. A single active thread can generate several notifications in a few minutes, and admins are often on every one of them. Rather than sending a separate email for each comment, Command Established collects the comments (along with any other batchable notifications you receive in the same 15-minute window) into a single email with a link to each work order.

You still see each comment in the in-app notification center immediately, and if you have push enabled for New comment under Work Orders, the push arrives right away too — only the email is bundled.

Which alerts are still sent immediately?

Anything you may need to act on before a 15-minute window closes: new CAD incidents, incident assignments, schedule exception approvals/denials and assignment changes, training cancellations, member invites, permit verification links, subscription/payment failures, Stripe Connect and dispute alerts, and election open/closing-soon notices. See the full list above.

Can I turn digests off or change the frequency?

Not per user, at least not yet. There is no setting under Settings → Notifications to disable digests or change the 15-minute window; it applies to everyone in every department.

What you can control is which channel each notification type uses (a few system types, such as permit-application verification emails sent to applicants, have no setting at all). If you'd rather not get emails for a chatty type at all, set that type to In-app only (or In-app + Push) under Notification Types. And if you need something the instant it happens, push notifications are never batched — see Enable Push Notifications.

Does the unsubscribe link in a digest turn off all my emails?

No. Each group in a digest has its own unsubscribe link, and it turns off email for just that notification type. Your other notification types keep their current channel settings. You can always review or change them under Settings → Notifications.

Will I get a digest if I only had one notification?

You'll get an email, but it's the normal single-notification email rather than a digest. The digest format is only used when two or more notifications accumulate in the same window.
